Stanford University is one of the world's preeminent research universities. The campus is located in Stanford, California where it opened its doors in 1891 thanks to the founding grant from Leland Stanford and his wife in honor of their only son Leland Stanford Jr. who died at age 15. The university was the first of its kind in the Western US. The School of Humanities and Sciences is Stanford's largest school. The university has a strong reputation for pioneering new technologies. The Stanford Research Institute operated part of ARPANET which later became the Internet. Stanford also owns the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve and the Hokins Marine Station which are used for research in wildlife and marine biology respectively.
